Pre Treatment
Healthy skin responds better to the treatment, allows better energy absorption, heals faster, and shows better and longer-lasting results.
A skin-rejuvenation protocol is recommended prior to IPL, especially for older/PIH-prone clients. We recommended to use hydrating & anti-melanogenic skincare on a daily basis, at least 2 weeks prior to first 3D IPL treatment.
As part of your IPL consultation, your Sugarmoon Skin Care specialist will provide recommendations to prepare you for your treatment.
Post Care
- Expect to feel hot and red in the areas treated after your session. The duration and intensity will vary for each individual as your skin is unique.
- As needed, apply a cold compress followed by a soothing and moisturizing product like Nature's Aid Skin Moisturizing Gel or Original Gel.
- We recommend switching out your regular skincare products with the Repechage Red-out line to calm your skin for your remaining IPL treatments. The Red-Out travelling kit and mask are an easy way to ensure you are using the best products on your skin during your treatment.
- We recommend adding our Sugarmoon Vitamin C Serum to your skincare routine. Anti-melanogenic ingredients like Vitamin C support the work the IPL has started in your skin.
- Apply a mineral-based SPF 50 daily. This is critically important.
- Avoid UV exposure on all treated areas by staying out of the sun for at least 7-10 days post-treatment.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, swimming, and intensive exercise for 48 hours post-treatment.
- Exfoliants, scrubs, perfumed soaps and lotions, bleaching creams, astringents, and retinol should be avoided until the skin has healed. Typically this is 7-10 days however it may vary for each individual. If you’re unsure, avoid these products.
- Do not touch the area and let any scabs peel off spontaneously.
- We recommend a Flex MD Phototherapy session two weeks after each IPL treatment to expedite your skin's rejuvenation process and enhance the results you'll see with your skin

Absolutely! At Sugarmoon, your safety is our top priority. We use the Health Canada-approved Alpha Laser System, featuring the Milo Melanin Reader for precise skin analysis of your melanin content and an advanced cooling system for maximum comfort and protection. Precise measurement of your melanin content ensures maximum effectiveness of the treatment by ensuring the parameters are not too light for achieving the desired result but also not set too high where skin damage can occur. Additionally Alpha’s advanced contact cooling control allows your practitioner to achieve the perfect balance between protecting your skin and avoiding overcooling . Contact cooling is essential for protecting your skin during your IPL treatment and Alpha creates the ideal temperatures between 5-15 degree celcius. However, overcooling (or too aggressive cooling), which is commonly used by other IPL devices, may hinder energy delivery to your skin and diminish the end result.

IPL is most effective for individuals with lighter to medium skin tones, typically Fitzpatrick skin types I–III, who want to reduce sun damage, redness, or uneven pigmentation. The Fitzpatrick Scale is a classification system that categorizes skin tones based on their response to sun exposure, ranging from Type I (very fair, burns easily) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, rarely burns). Since IPL targets pigment in the skin, those with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) may have a higher risk of pigmentation changes. However, every skin type is unique, and during your consultation, we’ll assess your skin and recommend the best treatment options to ensure safe, effective results tailored to you.
